clarification

since a few people may be taking offense:

chicago isn't boring per se. it's just old hat. it's home. it's a
comfy place where i know most the nooks and crannies.

it is NOT a vacation. it is not exotic. and, especially with my
grandparents and kate being in the suburbs, the suburbs are even LESS
of a vacation and even LESS excotic than downtown.

that is my problem with chicago. my problem is that i never get time
for a vacation. until now....

Not to disuade you from more exotic fare, but next time you are dragged back home, consider a side trip to Milwaukee for a change of pace: great (but slightly different and more open) lakefront, unique dining (in a good way -- some of the best German food in the land, cheese creations unheard of on the coasts, and you can get an authentic butterburger, not that fake Culvers thing), a world renown zoo, the new art museum is incredible, and a quirky/walkable downtown. (I'm not a fan of Miller Park but if you're into baseball stadiums, it's got some uniqueness to it -- how many other ballparks have 4 tiers not including the skyboxes). Madison makes a good quick road trip too (make a halfway stop at Toad Hall in Rockford). And if you can wake up early enough, Detroit/Windsor -- but that deserves a post of its own.

P.S. For what it's worth, Montreal is the most romantic city I know (never having been to Paris), but you need the right person to go with (of course) and it's probably only worth an extended weekend before it gets old. Still, you know "Mount Royal" was made into a park by the same person who designed Central Park.
